"Technique and motor define Eric O'Neill's game, not his measurements. He compensates for a lack of prototypical length and mass with violent hands, natural ankle flexibility to bend the edge, and a relentless effort that collapses the pocket. He projects as a quality starter and an immediate pass-rush specialist."

01Play style

Eric O'Neill is a high-intensity specimen who embodies the high-motor edge archetype with intriguing positional flexibility. After dominating in the FCS ranks with LIU and translating that production to James Madison, he has proven his snap anticipation and ability to win the outside shoulder do not depend on the level of competition. He is a relentless defender who uses excellent hand technique to defeat offensive tackles' reach blocks, always maintaining sufficient leverage to close internal run lanes. His ability to work from a two- and three-point stance provides versatility that NFL defensive coordinators will value in hybrid schemes. Despite his productivity, the major question mark lies in his physical ceiling against the muscle mass of NFL starting tackles. Although his first step is explosive, he sometimes struggles to convert that speed to power when the offensive lineman establishes an early anchor. His projection is that of a designated pass rusher who can eventually become a solid starter if he adds critical mass without sacrificing his lateral agility. O'Neill is the type of player scouts red-flag for his competitive intangibles; a pass-rush workhorse who finds ways to win through technical refinement and sustained effort (second-effort pressure).

02What he does well
  1. 01

    Inexhaustible motor and lateral range

O'Neill plays at a speed that rarely diminishes, allowing him to make tackles from backside pursuit. His click-and-close ability is elite for his level, closing space in seconds against scrambling QBs. In the NFL, this translates to immediate value on special teams and in extended pursuit situations.

  2. 02

Proactive hand technique and counter moves

He is not a player who gets stuck; he displays advanced ability to hand fight coordinated with his footwork. He uses a highly refined swipe and club-rip that allow him to disengage from heavier linemen before they establish their frame. This technical maturity significantly reduces his learning curve to the next level.

  3. 03

Ankle flexibility and bend around the arc

He possesses the ability to "bend the corner" while maintaining low pad level, making it difficult for tackles to find his chest. His ability to lean his body toward the quarterback while maintaining contact balance is a classic tool of an impactful edge rusher. This allows him to win the edge even when the block appears well-positioned.

  4. 04

    Eye discipline and backfield reads

He rarely bites on read-options or jet sweeps, displaying enviable gap integrity for a player with his sack production. He quickly identifies play flow and processes information in real-time to adjust his attack angle. This instinctive intelligence allows him to play faster than his testing times would dictate.

03What he's missing
  1. 01

Lack of critical mass and anchor against power

In direct run situations against power/gap schemes, he can be displaced if the lineman lands the first impact. His physical frame appears near its limit, raising questions about his ability to absorb the constant punishment of NFL blocking schemes. He will require a professional strength program to avoid being a vulnerability in short-yardage situations.

  2. 02

    Average arm length

He does not possess the infinite limbs scouts seek in a first-round prospect, limiting his ability to establish separation late in the rep. If he doesn't win with initial speed or technique, he can get "trapped" on the lineman's chest. This forces him to be nearly perfect with his hand timing to avoid being neutralized by tackles with greater reach.

  3. 03

    Reliance on outside speed

While he has counters, his game still leans too heavily on winning outside, which can make him predictable for NFL veterans. He needs to develop a more fearsome bull rush that forces opponents to respect his power, not just his quickness. The lack of a consistent power move currently keeps him in Tier 3 of the draft board.

Alex Highsmith

Projects a career as a highly effective #2 pass rusher whose technical skill and intelligence allow him to be a consistent and productive starter.

/ CEILING
Trey Hendrickson

This represents a ceiling where O'Neill's technique and motor transcend his lack of size, enabling him to become a high-volume sack specialist.

/ FLOOR
Dorance Armstrong

This represents a floor where his lack of power and length confine him to a rotational role, primarily effective on third downs due to his motor.

Eric's RAS will publish once the official testing drops.

The Relative Athletic Score needs the 40, vertical, broad jump, shuttle and 3-cone — numbers that don't exist until the NFL Combine or pro day. Until then we grade the EDGE on percentiles vs. his positional cohort (see athletic radar below).
