"Rangy Toledo free safety with back-to-back All-America nods and a ball-punching signature; the eval hinges on whether MAC-honed instincts translate against NFL-caliber route benders in the middle third."Pre-draft read

01Play style

Deep-middle single-high safety who plays with pattern-eye discipline and ball violence. He reads the No. 2 receiver's route stem, triggers downhill on flat and dig concepts, and finishes at the catch point with an active punch. His range shows up tracking over-the-top posts without opening the gate early and flipping cleanly to carry vertical seams.

As a tackler, he arrives with pad level under the ball-carrier and wraps through contact. Man reps on tight ends and slot backs work in short-area cover-1 divides, but vertical concepts suit him better than trail-and-mirror on double moves. He is a post-snap communicator and rotator, often the pre-snap-check safety.

02Scheme fit
Ideal system

Cover-3 match, with a single-high safety who consistently dictates coverage and rotates to cover ground.

Single-high FSDeep-middle safetyCore special-teamerDime package safety
Best role

Year 1 core special-teams player evolving into a rotational deep safety who provides valuable snaps in a single-high scheme; Pro Bowl ceiling as a ball-hawking NFL starter.

Wrong fit

Man-heavy Cover-2 or Cover-4 systems that ask their safeties to consistently trail and mirror vertical routes against high-end receiving talent.

McNeil-Warren's elite ball violence and pattern-read processing are ideal for a single-high scheme that emphasizes coverage dictation and downhill triggers from a deep safety.

04The evaluation

This safety prospect projects as a modern single-high defender, valued for his instincts and rare ball production. A team acquiring him buys a player with a proven ability to create turnovers due to his consistent technique at the catch point, rather than relying on luck. The 4.52 forty time at his size confirms that his on-tape range translates to the next level, offering the deep-third presence required.

He arrived at Toledo as a special-teamer in 2022 and developed into a back-to-back All-MAC performer, earning a Second-Team All-America nod in his senior season. His impressive nine career forced fumbles, including a MAC-leading four as a sophomore, highlight his impact. His senior year was strong despite a previous season being shortened by injury, showcasing his resilience and consistent production against a Group of Six schedule.

Evaluators consistently placed him in the late Day 2 range. Concerns included a "MAC discount" for his competition level, questions about his man-coverage ceiling against NFL-caliber tight ends, and an injury-shortened junior season. Ultimately, he was drafted 58th overall, seen as a projection for a single-high role with significant special teams contributions.

05Strengths
  1. 01

    Ball violence at catch point

Nine career forced fumbles, including a MAC-leading four in 2023, showcasing technique that strips through the receiver's hands.

  2. 02

    Pattern-read processor

Diagnoses No. 2 receiver route stems cleanly, triggering on flat, dig, and post concepts without hesitation.

  3. 03

    Deep-third range

Covers grass over-the-top on post and go concepts without opening prematurely, with on-tape speed indicating boundary hash carry ability.

  4. 04

    Tackling reliability

Arrives with pad level under the ball-carrier, wrapping through contact for 138 combined tackles across 2023-24 with few misses.

  5. 05

    Special-teams pedigree

Started as a gunner and vise in 2022, projecting as a Day 1 core-four contributor while defensive snaps increase.

06Concerns
  1. 01

    MAC-schedule discount

Bulk of production against Group of 6 offenses, with NFL-caliber route-benders remaining a projection rather than a proven matchup.

  2. 02

Man-coverage ceiling on TEs and slot backs

Trail-and-mirror reps are functional but stiffen on double moves, reading as a scheme-fit man defender, not an island.

  3. 03

    Injury-shortened 2024

Missed the final five games of his junior year due to a lower-body issue, limiting sample size in a key developmental season.

  4. 04

    Frame plays lighter than listed

Length is 32⅛ inches, but at 201 pounds, he can be displaced by pulling guards in the box, not ideal in 12 personnel.

**Pre-draft context.** McNeil-Warren arrived in Toledo as a lightly recruited Lakewood (St. Petersburg, FL) product and spent 2022 as a gunner before the light flipped in year two. His 2023 breakout — 69 tackles, four forced fumbles to lead the MAC, two picks — put him on Day-3 boards; a 2024 season cut short at eight games by a lower-body injury moved him to the eval margins. He answered with a 2025 senior year that pushed him firmly onto Day 2: 77 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a 37-yard pick-six against Western Kentucky in Week 2. Second-Team All-America (Sporting News, FWAA), Third-Team AP, PFF's G6 Defensive Player of the Year, back-to-back All-MAC and a Jim Thorpe semifinalist nod. Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl invitations converted the tape into an all-star-circuit fit; the Combine — 4.52 forty, 1.58 10-split, 35.5-inch vertical, 10-2 broad, 32⅛-inch arms — closed the medical and athletic questions inside the safety band.

**NFL fit — Cleveland Browns.** Cleveland took him at #58 to slot behind Grant Delpit and Ronnie Hickman while immediately owning a special-teams rotation seat. The defensive approach, with its split-safety looks, gives him a deep-third home from day one on sub packages, and the ball-punching signature is exactly the trait profile that plays in a defense that lives on takeaways. The developmental question is man reps on tight ends when Delpit rotates into the box — that's where the trail-and-mirror flags from the MAC tape get real. Early camp reports have him competing for the third safety / dime-back rotation.

**Retrospective.** Too early to call — he was drafted three months ago and hasn't played a regular-season snap. The bet at #58 was that instincts and ball production travel and that special-teams equity underwrites the developmental runway. Check back after the 2027 offseason for a real read on the arc.
