Etienne is a 5-foot-9, 198-pound one-cut back who plays lower than his frame suggests. He presses the line with patience, plants hard off the outside foot and gets north in a hurry, and his contact balance lets him bounce off defensive backs and linebackers who arrive without leverage.
Where he separates from other small backs is on passing downs: he tracks the ball naturally, catches away from his frame, and gives honest effort in protection despite the size deficit. He is not a hammer between the tackles and he will not run away from NFL safeties in the open field, but he is a legitimate three-down option in a zone-based offense.
Shanahan outside zone is the perfect scheme for Etienne, leveraging his burst and agility into yardage, and his receiving ability into downfield production.
Etienne should be a priority pick in the mid-rounds and instantly contribute as a pass-catching specialist and change-of-pace back. His ceiling is a starting back in a zone-run scheme.

Etienne arrived at Florida as a four-star with immediate juice, gave the Gators two productive rotational seasons (719 and 753 rushing yards), then transferred to Georgia in 2024 and split a crowded backfield for 609 yards and nine scores in ten games. The counting numbers never popped because the touches were never his alone: 371 career carries across three years, with a peak season of 131.
The tape is better than the box score. He is a compact, low-slung one-cut runner with genuine contact balance, and the 4.42 forty and 1.51 ten-yard split show up as burst through the crease rather than as breakaway speed; he gets caught from behind more often than a 4.4 back should. What raises the floor is the passing game. Sixty-two career catches, natural hands away from the frame, and a willingness to stick his face in protection.
The projection is a Day 3 complementary back in a zone offense who earns third-down work early and returns kicks. Carolina took him at 114 and used him almost exactly the way the pre-draft profile suggested, just with a narrower job description. Etienne dressed for all 17 games as a rookie but never took over a backfield role: 20 carries for 94 yards at 4.7 a pop and three catches for 13 yards. The real value came on special teams, where he handled return duties and piled up 896 return yards, and the year ended sourly when he muffed a punt in the Wild Card loss to the Rams that Troy Reeder recovered.
The evaluation held up on both ends. The receiving and return traits got him dressed every week; the size and the absence of a college workload meant nobody trusted him with an early-down share. Year one reads like the likely comp rather than the ceiling. The question heading into 2026 is whether a change on the depth chart finally gives him the 120-touch season the tape always suggested he could handle.
