A fifth-year senior out of Connally High in Waco, Black arrived as a three-star and left as the most experienced defender on the roster: 62 games, 38 starts, a team captaincy, and the kind of special-teams résumé — punt gunner, field-goal block unit — that keeps a Day 3 corner employed. He is built to the classic outside template and wants to play with his hands on receivers.
The 2024 tape is the pitch. Oklahoma State's defense collapsed around him, giving up yardage in bulk, and he still posted three interceptions and nine passes defensed while allowing a 55.4 percent catch rate. His 2023 season was quieter but arguably cleaner, surrendering only 16 receptions across a full slate of coverage snaps. Waived by the Giants at the August 27 cutdown, Black landed on the Jets' practice squad two days later and was elevated for Weeks 2 and 7, playing 15 snaps, all on special teams. New York brought him back on October 21 as a free-agent signing and he stayed the rest of the way, finishing his rookie year with 11 games, two starts, 18 tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass defensed. His usable defensive work came in a November stretch — eight tackles against San Francisco, six at Detroit — when injuries thinned the room.
The honest read is that year one confirmed both halves of the report. The speed and the special-teams identity travelled, which is why two organizations kept finding room for him in a season that otherwise churned corners. The coverage reps were survival snaps rather than a claim on a job, and December returned him to the fourth-corner tier.
