In the run game he shoots alleys and arrives with force, though he diagnoses a beat late. The separator is core-four special teams, where his speed and physicality made him a coverage weapon long before the defense trusted him.

Crawford is a five-year college defensive back whose football identity was forged on kick coverage rather than in a starting secondary. He signed with Texas as a four-star athlete out of Tyler and never locked down a defensive job in Austin, playing 46 games across four seasons with one start and 61 total tackles while building his reputation as one of the program's best special teams players.
The transfer to Nevada in 2024 was the swing move of his career. Given the keys to a starting job for the first time, he started all 13 games and produced 76 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery — the only full body of defensive tape in his file. Then the Combine confirmed the traits: 4.41 in the forty, a 41.5-inch vertical and a 10-8 broad at 202 pounds. The flag was just as obvious. One year of starting production, a light résumé of coverage reps against Mountain West passing games, and testing numbers that outran the play speed on tape.
Boards had him as a late Day 3 flier whose floor was the kicking game and whose ceiling depended on whether the coverage instincts would catch up to the traits. Arizona took him at 225 as a special teams add with developmental safety upside, the right price for that bet.

The Cardinals got the version they drafted almost immediately. Crawford made the 53-man roster out of camp, debuted in Week 1 and played 15 games as a rookie with one start, finishing with 12 combined tackles and a pass breakup while living primarily on the coverage units. His season ended on injured reserve on January 1, 2026 after an ankle injury suffered in Week 17 against Cincinnati — a rough close to an otherwise successful first year for a 225th pick.
In hindsight the pick reads exactly as intended rather than as a steal or a miss. Seventh-round safeties who survive cut day, dress every week and contribute on four phases are outperforming their draft slot by definition, and Arizona identified the special teams trait that Texas coaches had been leaning on for four years. The open question is the same one that existed in April: whether a one-year starter with elite testing and modest coverage nuance ever becomes a defensive rotation piece. The 2026 camp, coming off the ankle, is the first real referendum.
