Smith is a coverage-first slot defender whose football identity was built at two very different programs. He arrived at West Virginia as a freshman starter with the range to play middle-of-the-field safety, then transferred to Georgia and was rebuilt as a nickel inside Kirby Smart's 4-2-5, where his job was to fit the run, handle tight ends and pressure off the edge of the box.
Production backs the tape. He posted 50 tackles and two interceptions as a true freshman in Morgantown, then 61 tackles and eight tackles for loss in 2020 before a knee injury wiped out his first Georgia season after one game. Tampa Bay used him exactly as advertised. As a rookie in 2024 he played the nickel role in Todd Bowles' sub packages, finishing with 54 tackles, two interceptions, seven pass breakups and three forced fumbles while working almost entirely inside the box. In 2025 the Buccaneers moved him to full-time safety opposite Antoine Winfield Jr., and he answered with 893 snaps, 100 tackles, 13 pass breakups, two sacks and an interception, leading the NFL among safeties in pass breakups and ranking fifth in combined interceptions plus breakups on 30-plus targets. Entering 2026 he is an entrenched starter, publicly focused on cleaning up his play in space against backs and tight ends.
In hindsight the miss was on the board, not on the player. The concern was that a 202-pound nickel without deep-third range would stay a sub-package specialist, and instead he grew into an every-down safety inside two seasons because the processing and ball skills traveled. He is not the free safety who takes the top off a shell and never will be, but the third round bought a starter who leads a defense in tackles and finishes plays on the ball. That is a hit.
