A sixth-year senior who arrived in Starkville in 2018 and left as the most productive defender in the SEC, Watson is a classic old-school Mike: thick through the chest, comfortable in traffic, and defined by contact rather than coverage. He looks the part of a run-down linebacker and plays exactly to that identity.
The production is the resume. He led the SEC with 137 tackles and 10 sacks in 2023 and became the first player in conference history to lead the league in both categories in the same year, taking AP SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors. That sack total came almost entirely on scheme blitzes, which is the flag: strip the free runs and the pass-rush profile shrinks. Coverage reps were similarly uneven, with late depth in zone and clear trouble mirroring backs.
The board read him as a two-down run defender with special teams value, and the sixth round is exactly where that profile lives. Cleveland took the tackles, the toughness and the blitz timing, and accepted that third down would belong to somebody else.

Cleveland waived him at the first cutdown of his rookie year, brought him back on the practice squad two days later and elevated him to the active roster by early October. He appeared in 14 games with one start in 2024 and lived on special teams, where he logged nine coverage tackles including a three-stop game against Kansas City, and stayed almost entirely off the defensive call sheet behind the veterans. Then 2025 disappeared: a biceps tear in an August practice put him on season-ending injured reserve before the opener, and he watched a rebuilt Browns linebacker room take shape without him. He returned to training camp in August 2026 still under contract and still fighting for the same job description.
In hindsight the pick has done exactly what a sixth-round thumper is supposed to do, no more and no less. The evaluation was right on both ends: the tape said run-down enforcer and core special teamer, and that is precisely the role he has filled when healthy.
