Mustapha is a downhill strong safety Wake Forest deployed in the box, over the slot and as a single-high rotator. His identity is the trigger: he reads keys off the guard, plants, and arrives with a compact, hips-through strike he finishes, wrapping and rolling instead of shoulder-diving. At 5-10 and 209 he plays with leverage most safeties cannot use, ducking blocks in the alley.
In coverage he is a zone-first defender who plays the quarterback's eyes, driving on hitches and crossers with real burst out of his break. Man reps against tight ends and slot backs are functional, not comfortable. The separator is the blitz: sent from depth or off the edge, his timing and short-area quickness made Wake Forest's pressure package free money.

A Richmond transfer who became Wake Forest's defensive tone-setter, Mustapha is a strong safety in the classic sense: compact, violent and most useful within twelve yards of the ball. He was a captain in 2023 and the emotional center of that defense, and the tape carries it — he plays every snap like the alley is personal property.
Production followed the role. He posted 37 tackles as a first-year starter in 2021, added seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks of blitz value in 2022, then piled up 80 stops on the way to second-team All-ACC in 2023. The signature reps are the ones without highlights: correct fits, spilled pullers, tackles made at the line. The flags are the frame and the coverage ceiling — best in zone, occasionally late in man against slot separators, and prone to biting when an offense sells run.
Boards had him in the third-to-fourth range as the class's third or fourth safety, and San Francisco took him at 124 with the pick acquired in the Trey Lance trade. It was a scheme call: a defense that wants safeties who tackle, blitz and play with rules more than range asked him to do exactly what he had done in Winston-Salem. Fair value for a starter-quality box safety with special-teams insurance underneath the projection.

Mustapha started faster than the pick suggested. He opened 2024 in a rotation, took over strong safety by midseason and finished with 72 tackles, an interception and five pass breakups across 16 games — then tore his ACL in Week 18. Surgery cost him the front of 2025: he opened on PUP, missed only one game past the four-week minimum and reclaimed the starting job in Week 6. What came back looked like what left, with 76 tackles, three pass defenses and an interception in 12 starts, plus 11 more stops and a sack in San Francisco's playoff run. He enters 2026 healthy and penciled in next to Ji'Ayir Brown.
In hindsight the fourth round was the right neighborhood and maybe a small discount. He has not become a coverage safety and probably will not — the length and man limitations flagged in the spring are still there, and offenses keep testing the seam over him. But he was a two-year starter before his 25th birthday on a playoff defense, and the tackling floor that made him easy to like on tape has translated cleanly. The knee is the open question: safeties who live going forward age on their legs, and this one already has a repair. Four healthy years of this and the pick pays.
