A three-year starter and national champion whose evaluation was less about traits than about sample size. McCarthy operated the most run-heavy offense in college football's top tier, distributing on early downs, throwing off play-action and living inside structure. His identity is efficiency, poise and clean footwork rather than volume or off-script magic.
The résumé is unusual: 27-1 as a starter across his last two seasons, a title, and a 72.3 completion percentage as a junior — on only 332 attempts. Signature performances came in the rivalry game and the playoff run, when he handled pressure and hit the shot plays the game plan asked for. The flags were obvious and honest: he was almost never asked to carry an offense, his ball did not consistently drive to the boundary, and there was a stretch of tape where footwork under duress got loose and accuracy scattered.

Year one never happened: a torn meniscus in August required surgery and cost McCarthy his entire rookie season, leaving the Vikings to ride a journeyman while their first-round quarterback rehabbed. Year two handed him the keys, and it was a jagged introduction — a comeback win in Chicago in Week 1, then an ankle injury that cost six games, a stretch of five losses in six starts with multiple interceptions in four straight games, and a late-season run of three straight wins including a 31-0 shutout and a 250-yard afternoon in Dallas. He finished with 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in ten games.
In hindsight the pre-draft concerns and the pre-draft hope both look intact. The processing and the poise show up in the good weeks; the ball placement outside the numbers and the durability do not yet.
