A four-year Cougar with a late-blooming arc, Smith-Wade entered the 2024 cycle as a coverage technician whose tape read better than his measurables. At 5-10, 184 pounds with a 4.54 forty, he was never going to win a size-and-speed argument, but he consistently won route timing, leverage and the catch point against Pac-12 receivers.
His 2022 season was the calling card: a full-time starter, All-Pac-12 honorable mention, eight pass breakups, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and one of the highest PFF coverage grades among conference corners. The 2023 follow-up was truncated — seven games and 35 tackles before injury ended it — which cost him momentum and left evaluators projecting off a shortened senior tape. Senior Bowl and Combine invitations kept his stock alive, but the durability question and the frame stayed on the board.
Consensus had him as a Day 3 nickel projection, and Carolina bought exactly that. Trading with the Jets to move for him at 157, the Panthers took a corner who had never played inside and openly told scouts he expected to. The conversion happened faster than anyone scripted. Smith-Wade opened 2024 on the bubble, then took over the nickel job in Week 13 when Carolina released Troy Hill and chose the rookie over veteran Dane Jackson. He started four games and finished with 39 tackles, an interception off Baker Mayfield and a pass deflection across 14 appearances before landing on IR for the final two weeks. In 2025 he was the primary slot defender, sealed the team's first win with a pick-six against Atlanta, briefly lost the job to undrafted rookie Corey Thornton during the playoff push, then reclaimed it after Thornton's season-ending injury. By 2026 minicamp he was cross-training at free safety, with 626 of his 977 career snaps having come from inside.
In hindsight, this is what a good fifth-round pick looks like. Carolina identified a positional conversion the player himself endorsed, and he became a real contributor inside of two seasons without ever being handed the role.
