A four-year Illini who arrived as a lightly recruited three-star and left as a consensus All-American, Witherspoon is a competitor first and a technician second, though by 2022 he was both. He is a lean 181 pounds and plays nothing like it, which is the whole scouting report in one line.
Illinois built the nation's stingiest defense around him in 2022, and quarterbacks stopped testing his side: 14 pass breakups and three interceptions on a shrinking target share, plus 41 tackles that mostly came forward, in run support. The flags were physical, not mental. A hamstring kept him out of Combine drills, and the frame invited the usual questions about surviving 220-pound X receivers across a 17-game season.
Boards had him as the 1A or 1B corner of the class with Christian Gonzalez, and the split came down to taste: length and testing against instincts and toughness. Seattle, sitting at five with a defense that had been bullied on the perimeter, took the temperament. Devon Witherspoon had an excellent rookie season as a starting cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, earning a Pro Bowl selection. He quickly established himself as a top defensive back.
Seattle got the player immediately. A hamstring cost him the preseason and Week 1 of 2023, but by Week 4 he had a 97-yard pick-six and two sacks against the Giants, and he closed the year with 79 tackles, 16 passes defensed and three sacks in 14 games: PFWA All-Rookie, a Pro Bowl and a Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist. Under Mike Macdonald in 2024 he started all 17 games, moved between the boundary, the slot and the blitz package, and made a second Pro Bowl on 98 tackles even as the splash numbers dropped. A Week 1 knee injury in 2025 cost him five games, but the 12 he played were his best: second-team All-Pro, a third straight Pro Bowl, and a postseason that ended with a sack and three quarterback hits in Seattle's Super Bowl LX win.
In hindsight the only thing wrong with the evaluation was the worry. The weight never mattered, the tackling and recognition traveled exactly as advertised, and the versatility made him more valuable in a modern defense than the purer cover corners taken around him. Seattle exercised his fifth-year option in March 2026 and in August made him the highest-paid corner in league history at four years and $132 million, which is the market's way of saying the fifth pick was cheap.
